-- CarePass® Platform Now Open to Developers; Enhanced with Popular MapMyFitness Apps --
Aetna (NYSE: AET) today announced key enhancements to its CarePass Platform, which will empower consumers through simple, integrated access to some of the best health and wellness apps in the marketplace. Joining the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) open data initiative by making valuable public health data available, these enhancements include:
- the CarePass Developer Challenge, where two winning developers will share a $100,000 prize for developing an innovative solution that encourages medication adherence;
- easy access to data and services for third-party developers, to help them create new solutions to make health care more convenient;
- the addition of MapMyFitness, which provides runners, cyclists, walkers, and athletes of all ability levels with access to innovative fitness and nutrition tracking applications.
Aetna will be demonstrating these enhancements and formally launching the developer challenge today at 10:35 a.m. ET at the Health Data Initiative Forum in Washington, D.C.
“Our top objective is to make it easier for consumers to take control of their health, from accessing care to staying well,” said Martha Wofford, Aetna vice president and head of the CarePass Platform. “We believe that opening up data will unleash the creativity of developers to build innovative solutions that drive convenience for consumers.”
Resources and a Challenge for the Developer Community
Beginning today, Aetna is supporting developers with a portal that offers API management, documentation and support, and various communication channels. APIs currently include multiple reformatted data sets from HHS alongside de-identified Aetna pharmacy data – offering unique opportunities for developers to “mash up” public and private data. It also includes retail drug price data from GoodRx, a Webby-award winning website and mobile application focused on lowering prescription drug costs for Americans. GoodRx provides millions of current prices for more than 6,000 prescription drugs at virtually every major U.S. pharmacy. The service also lists available discounts, savings tips and alternative options. Developers can register with the CarePass® Developer Portal at http://bit.ly/CarePassDev.
Once registered with the portal, developers can participate in the CarePass Developer Challenge. The challenge will offer a $75,000 first prize and $25,000 second prize for the apps that best help consumers remember to take their medications. The winning apps will be integrated into the CarePass platform. The challenge is currently open, and runs through August 17, 2012. More details about the functional requirements for the challenge can be found here.
Apps That Make Healthy Living Convenient for Consumers
In addition to offering new resources for developers, CarePass has been enhanced with the addition of MapMyFitness. MapMyFitness provides more than nine million runners, cyclists, walkers, and other fitness enthusiasts -- from the casual beginner to the elite athlete -- with access to an innovative geo-mapping application that permits them to track and store their daily running, cycling, walking or hiking routes in an online database, a searchable database of routes across the globe, essential community-based fitness content, unique online training tools and fitness calculators, comprehensive global event listings, and a dynamic social network of healthy and active individuals. MapMyFitness apps include MapMyRun, MapMyRide and MapMyWalk.
“At MapMyFitness, we believe a healthy life starts with diet and exercise,” said Richard Jalichandra, CEO of MapMyFitness. “We’re thrilled to partner with Aetna and iTriage on the CarePass solutions to promote healthier living."
MapMyFitness joins iTriage on the CarePass Platform. iTriage, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aetna with almost 6 million downloads of the iTriage® mobile app, allows users to research their symptoms, find a medical provider that serves their needs and is available when and where they need them, and book an appointment – all from their smartphone.
Using CarePass to “Sync” Health Information
It is simple for consumers to use the CarePass Platform. Consumers simply download any app enabled with the CarePass® Sync technology, choose the “Sync with CarePass” option within the app, and give the app permission to begin accessing identified components of their CarePass Sync personal health cloud. Everything else happens behind the scenes. For example, go for a run and the distance is automatically added to the user’s personal health cloud; open a participating nutrition app and the calories from the run are automatically figured into the daily caloric intake. The CarePass Sync technology will be available for consumers beginning on June 18.
The CarePass Platform delivers an integrated health care solution that provides information when and where consumers want it. The open, digital platform enables consumers to share information across applications and create a personalized, coherent experience to manage their whole health, from getting care to staying well, all with one sign-on. Aetna will continue adding more market-leading applications to the CarePass Platform throughout 2012 and beyond.
