TORONTO, May 2, 2012 /CNW/ - TMX Group Inc. today announced April 2012 trading statistics for its diversified group of exchanges - Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, Montreal Exchange (MX) and Natural Gas Exchange (NGX), as well as TMX Select, TMX Group's alternative trading system.

Volume on Toronto Stock Exchange in April 2012 was down 24% compared to March 2012 and 21% compared to April 2011. Transactions were down 19% from March 2012, though remained on pace with the same month a year earlier.

TSX Venture Exchange experienced a 24% decrease in volume in April 2012 compared to March 2012; volume was down 49% compared to April 2011. Transactions decreased 19% from March 2012 and were down 46% from April 2011.

MX achieved a new record in average daily volume in April 2012 of 284,783 contracts traded, surpassing the previous record of 280,909 contracts traded that was set in August 2011. Volume on MX was up 22% in April 2012 compared to April 2011, though was down 7% compared to March 2012. Open interest contracts at the end of April 2012 were down 6% compared to the end of March 2012, though were up 14% compared to the end of April 2011.

Volume on NGX in April 2012 was down 16% compared to March 2012 and up 7% compared to April 2011.
