CONCORD, ON, Nov. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - RuggedCom Inc. ("RuggedCom") (TSX:RCM), a leading designer and manufacturer of utility gradeEthernet and 4G wireless broadband networks for mission-critical applications in harsh environments, has been chosen by PowerStream, the second largest municipally-owned electricity distribution company in Ontario, to deliver a wide area communications solution for monitoring privately owned distributed generation installations.
RuggedCom's WiMAX solution, RuggedMAX, will provide PowerStream with a cost-effective and reliable method of communicating with generators spread across their 800km sq. territory. The 1.8GHz wireless connection will be used in the monitoring of private solar generating assets 250kW and larger.
"RuggedMAX was chosen because we required a product that can operate reliably in the substation environment," says Glenn Allen, Manager of Station Design, PowerStream. "Our investigation revealed that RuggedCom's WiMAX product had the functionality we required, and their years of experience focusing specifically on rugged communication networks was reassuring."
"The integrated system can achieve exceptional performance via the unique layer-two forwarding capability of the RuggedMAX network solution," explains Elik Jaeger, VP of Rugged Wireless for RuggedCom. "Once a wide-area wireless infrastructure is in place for the distribution generation solution, the same wireless coverage footprint can be leveraged to deliver other applications such as distribution automation, security solutions and video surveillance."
RuggedCom's RuggedMAX™ is the world's first utility grade mobile WiMAX platform designed for the harsh environment of an electric substation by complying with standards such as IEEE 1613 and IEC 61850-3. RuggedMAX™ supports a unique standalone network architecture, which can operate without the need for an ASN gateway, ultimately reducing end-to-end latency and improving system reliability.
