About Liu Fang
As a child prodigy, Liu Fang, born in Kunming in the Chinese province of
Yunnan, gave her first public performance at the age of nine. She
moved to Canada after graduating from Shanghai Conservatory in 1993.
Liu Fang is most well-known for her virtuosic and expressive
interpretation of traditional pipa (a four-string lute) and guzheng
music from the classical and folkloric traditions. Whether playing solo
or accompanied by orchestra and other traditional instruments (oud,
shakuhachi, kora, sitar), her repertoire - either warrior or poetic -
is able to transmit in an erudite and significant way the beauty and
richness of this ancient music as well as the subtle sonorities of the
instruments by the power and sensibility of her play.
About the conductor
Born in Montreal, Wanda Kaluzny started her musical studies with lessons
in piano and organ. She began her conducting career at the age of 11
when she assumed the position of organist and choir director at the
Holy Cross Parish in Montreal, a position she held for eight years. A
year later at the age of twenty, she founded the Montreal Chamber
Orchestra making her at the time, the youngest and only woman conductor
of a professional orchestra. Kaluzny's conducting studies include
working with Stefan Stuligrosz in Poland and with Charles Bruck at the
Pierre Monteux Memorial Foundation in the U.S. She toured in Europe as
Maestro Bruck's assistant and also guest conducted in North America and
Europe. In April 1990, she was the first woman to guest conduct the
Baden-Baden Symphony in Germany.

Director and Conductor, Wanda Kaluzny. Under her leadership the MCO has
