VANCOUVER, Mar. 10, 2010 (Canada NewsWire Group) -- /CNW Telbec/ -- Sidney Crosby, Assistant Captain of the Canadian Men's Olympic Hockey Team, today announced that he would donate the proceeds from his winning gold medal to the Sidney Crosby Foundation. The Foundation, created in his home province of Nova Scotia in 2009, is committed to providing financial support to charities that are beneficial to the community as a whole, specifically charities benefitting children.
About the donation, Sidney Crosby said: "I started the foundation in 2009 with the hope that I would be able to give back to local communities like the one that I grew up in. Winning gold in Canada at the 2010 Winter Games has been a phenomenal experience. I want to be able to give back to local organizations so that other young people have the opportunity to reach for their dreams as well."
Bell Canada, a Premier National Partner and the exclusive Telecommunications Provider to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, will match Mr. Crosby's donation of $20,000.
"Bell is so proud of the accomplishments of each and every athlete who competed at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games," said Loring Phinney, Bell's Vice President, Olympic and Corporate Marketing. "As part of our legacy to our athletes as well as to these Games, we wish to support their dedication not only to their sport but to local communities wherever we can. When we heard what Sidney was doing we knew that supporting his initiative was the right thing to do."
