Phyterra Yeast (TM) Receives Kosher Approval for Yeast Strains and PEI Labs

Vancouver, BC - February 23, 2010 - Phyterra Yeast™ , a unit of Functional Technologies Corp. (OOTC:FEBTF) (TSXV:FEB) (TSX-V: FEB), today announced that the company's research laboratory in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI) and all commercial yeast strains developed in this certified laboratory have received kosher approval from Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations (the "OU"). On-site supervision of the certification process with an OU Rabbinic Representative recently took place at the PEI facilities.

President and COO Garth Greenham commented, "Kosher certification means our laboratory meets some of the highest standards of quality for the food industry - this designation provides our customers added value and differentiates our yeast strains in the market. This approval also applies to any future products we develop for the food and beverage industry".

Based on this certification, the company is now able to utilize contract-manufacturing facilities that specialize in kosher production, increasing its flexibility in this area.

The OU is the world's largest kosher certification agency, certifying over 275,000 products produced in nearly 6,000 plants located in 68 countries around the world. Like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, the "OU" logo, one of the world's best-known trademarks, instills confidence in the purchaser that the product has passed inspection and meets high quality standards. Many of the world's most recognized brands, choose the OU for their kosher certification, including Avebe, BASF, Best Foods, Cerestar, Coca Cola, Cognis, Peter Cremer, Danisco, DSM, General Mills (NYSE:GIS) , Symrise (Haarmann & Reimer), Chr. Hansen, Hebei Welcome Pharmaceutical, H.J. Heinz, Kraft/Nabisco, M&M, McCormick & Co. (NYSE:MKC) , Nestlé, Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) , Pillsbury, Quest, Reynolds Aluminum, Rhodia (OOTC:RHAYY) , and thousands more.
